Controlling the swelling behavior of polymeric material in a hydrophilic medium, comprising incorporating reactive bridging molecules into the material and crosslinking the polymer chains with the bridging molecules to stabilize the materials volume in the medium until is comes into contact with a reagent capable of cleaving the bridging molecules at a site where swelling is desired, is new.
