This invention relates to improvements in and relating to retention apparatus. The retention apparatus is used to maintain a substance delivery device in a passage or body cavity of an animal for predetermined periods, particularly a cavity that can be readily accessed, including the vagina, uterus, and rectum. Such retention is required where controlled delivery of substances from the delivery device into the animal is desired as part of chemical and/or hormonal intervention programmes. Substances delivered may include anti-parasitic agents, nutritional supplements, vaccines, hormones, and so forth. The retention apparatus includes positioning apparatus for maintaining the substance delivery device in a preferred position within the body cavity of the animal and restraining apparatus to hinder unwanted removal of the positioning apparatus and the substance delivery device from the cavity. The invention is characterised by a portion of the restraining apparatus being attached in a preferred location on the external surface of the animal's body via attachment means.
