A vertical softside suitcase provided with a recessed front panel opening markedly smaller than the overall dimensions of the suitcase is described herein. The inward position of the zipper used to maintain the access panel in a closed position to thereby decrease the risk of zipper damage during the mechanical and/or manual handling of the suitcase by air transportation companies, for example. Since the access panel contributes less to the overall structural integrity of the suitcase, supplemental structural reinforcing elements are added.
