A sintered compact, characterized as consisting of 50 vol % to 78 vol % of high pressure phase type boron nitride and the balance amount of a bonding phase, wherein the bonding phase comprises at least one member selected from among a nitride, a carbide, a carbonitride and a boride of Ti; a nitride, a boride and an oxide of Al; a carbide and a boride of W; a nitride, a carbide , a carbonitride and a boride of Co; a carbide and a boride of Ni; and their mutual solid solutions, wherein the bonding phase forms a continuous phase i n the sintered compact, and wherein the total content of the metal components of Al, W, Co and Ni which are present as compounds is 3 to 20 wt % based on the weight of the sintered compact. The sintered compact exhibits excellent resistance to cratering even in cutting operation under conditions wherein a knife edge has a high temperature and the compact is exposed to high impact, as is seen in a high speed intermittent cutting of quenched steel wherein cutting speed V is 150 m/min or more, which results in a long life thereof.< /SDOAB> |
