Nucleic acid molecule (I) comprising DNA sequence of 2950 bp (given in the specification), encoding an erythropoietin (EPO) polypeptide (II), transcriptional and translational regulatory sequences from simian virus 40 (SV40), including the SV40 early promoter and a sequence encoding resistance to an antibiotic, is new. Independent claims are also included for the following: (a) mammalian cells that contain (I); and (b) production of functional (II) by culturing cells of (a).
