An invalid hoist includes a mast (11, Fig 1) and a lifting arm 12 including a load cell (not shown) providing a signal representative of the weight of a person. The arm is connected to the mast (11) or to a carriage 19 by an arrangement which allows the arm to be displaced angularly in a vertical plane against a resisting force 34 (e.g. a compression spring), in order to maintain the load cell in a constant orientation as a load is placed on the arm. The arrangement includes corresponding pairs of elongated guide tracks 30, 31 on opposite sides of the arm 12 which cooperate with guide elements 32, 33, causing the lifting arm to compensate for any bending due to the applied load. The arm may be raised or lowered by telescopically extending the mast, and/or by moving the carriage along at least part of said mast. A weight measurement display may be provided.
