814,150. Cold separation of air. GARRETT CORPORATION. March 21, 1957, No. 9288/57. Class 8(2). Production of liquid oxygen from air at atmospheric pressure is effected by partial liquidation of the air in a pass 27 of a heat exchanger 5 traversed by counterflowing medium at a temperature at least as low as that of liquid oxygen e.g. liquid hydrogen from a reservoir 3, the crude liquid oxygen being collected in a tank 28; the unliquefied crude nitrogen being passed through a duct 30 and a pass 31 of a heat exchanger 22 through which passes a portion of the incoming air, the crude liquid oxygen being forced by a pump 35 through a pass 33 of a heat exchanger 25 through which passes a second portion of the incoming air and hydrogen gas from the heat exchanger 5 being passed through a pass 8 of a third heat exchanger 9 traversed by the remainder of the incoming air. The outgoing hydrogen and oxygen gas in ducts 11, 36 may be fed to an engine. In a modification the combined cooled air leaving the three heat exchangers 9, 22, 25 Fig. 2 (not shown) are compressed before passing through the exchanger 5.
