In the present invention there is disclosed an apparatus for applying ink to a substrate, the apparatus comprising a reservoir (22) containing ink (24), an ink transferring roller (25) being partially submerged in the ink in the reservoir (22) and a baffle (100) comprising an array of flow restrictors (120) submerged in the ink (24) in the reservoir (22). The baffle dissipates energy of flow of the ink present in the reservoir (22), whereby the energy is induced by rotation of the ink transferring roller (25). In one modification the flow restrictors (120) comprise pegs (160) being mutually parallel to each other. In another modification the flow restrictors (120) comprise generally parallel bristle tufts (180).
