PURPOSE: A method for constructing a multi-level digest segment information description scheme of a multi-media stream, a method for generating digest stream on the basis of a multi-level digest segment information description scheme and an apparatus for browsing, recording and editing multi-level digest stream provided by the same method are provided to reduce a storing space by directly inserting digest stream information into a content-based data region for an original stream. CONSTITUTION: There is provided digest level header lists aligned in a digest level order. Each digest level list indicates the list in which digest segment information structures corresponding to a level are aligned in a time order. The digest level header contains digest level information, and the digest segment information structure contains time range information. The digest level header may have information on the running time of the digest segments belonging to a corresponding level, which can be used as a flag to inform of a damage of the digest segment information structure. In order to obtain a position of the digest segment information structure, a relative position or an absolute position with the current digest segment information structure can be displayed in the digest segment.
