PURPOSE: A remote failure detecting system for elevator and a method of controlling such a system are provided to accomplish improved reliability and accuracy of failure detection while performing failure detection suitable for each situation. CONSTITUTION: A system comprises an elevator control unit for controlling operation of elevator and outputting failure information for judging whether a failure has occurred and operation information indicative of the current operation state of the elevator; a monitor terminal for receiving the failure information and operation information from the elevator control unit, detecting a failure of elevator, current operation performance, and operation history, and outputting the operation information, performance information, operation history and failure information; and a monitor center for receiving the operation information, performance information,operating history and failure information from the monitor terminal, checking whether a failure of elevator has occurred or not, storing the result of the checking, warning the failure of elevator and displaying the current state of the elevator onto a monitor.
