PURPOSE: An apparatus and method for buffering data recorded in a packet form of an optical recording medium is provided to quickly read a data by skipping link blocks and buffering only user data blocks. CONSTITUTION: Parameters are transmitted to a decoder so that the decoder recognize whether the data blocks supplied to the decoder is link blocks(S81). A skip mode is turned on(S82). The decoder reads out a physical block address of the data block(S83). It is discriminated whether the currently accessed track is a track recorded in a fixed packet form(S84). If it is not a track recorded in a fixed packet form, that the track has ended is informed to microcomputer(S86). It is discriminated whether the currently inputted data blocks are link blocks(S85). In case that the input data block are judged to be link blocks, a signal transmission path between a data input line and a buffer RAM is switched to cut off buffering(S87). In case that the input data blocks are user data blocks, the buffering control unit connects the signal transmission path between the data input line and the buffer RAM, thereby performing buffering.
