PURPOSE: A method for operating a multicast asynchronous transfer mode(ATM) switch is provided to increase cell transmission rates by preventing a deadlock caused when transmitted cells are collided. CONSTITUTION: A method for operating a multicast asynchronous transfer mode(ATM) switch comprises the steps of: making an input controller analyze header information of cells inputted via many paths, and separating the cells into unicast cells for being transmitted to a destination and multicast cells for being transmitted to many destinations; if inputted cells are the unicast cells, transmitting the unicast cells to an output controller through many switch networks; if the cells are the multicast cells, transmitting the multicast cells to the output controller via a share memory; and making the output controller transmit the unicast cells and the multicast cells to corresponding destinations. |
