PURPOSE: An apparatus for automatic pickup and removing of sediment by an automated system for detecting an amount of sediment are provided to achieve an improved work efficiency and a reduced production cost while allowing an automatic pickup and removal of the sediment upon sensing the amount of sediment higher than a reference level. CONSTITUTION: An apparatus comprises a driving device(100) having a pair of driving gears(120)interconnected for a transmission of power from a driving motor(110) and a frame(140) having a hopper(130) for gathering the dropping sediment, a caterpillar pickup device(200) having a pair of caterpillars(210) arranged to be parallel-opposed to the gears(120) with a predetermined spacing therebetween, and a plurality of buckets(220) between caterpillars(210), the buckets(220) having both ends to be connected for rotating up to a defined range, the device(200) accommodates the sediment in a section within a sediment water channel(600), a transport device(300) having a plurality of guide sprockets(310) and a pair of guide rails(320) arranged inside and at a bottom surface of the channel(600), the caterpillars(210) and the buckets(220) being contact with each other, a sediment volume measuring device(400) arranged at both inner side surfaces of the channel(600) to be vertically movable and which measures the volume of sediment at the bottom of the channel by sensing the migration length of the plate(436) before/after the operation of the pickup device, and a CPU for controlling the devices(100, 400) according to a signal input from the device(400).
