PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To shorten the setting time and raise acceleration and deceleration by controlling braking characteristic differentials depending upon a direction where a work moves. SOLUTION: This positioning device has individually discrete motors 21, 22 installed for two pulleys 11, 14 sandwiching a belt 3. Thus the stretched state of the belt 3 between the motors 21, 22 can be controlled and in turn, the stretched state of the belt 3 around a part where a work is fitted. In addition, one 21 of these motors 21, 22 has a position detecting means whose encoder is used to control the position of the motor 21.
