PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a system discrimination device that can discriminate the systems of video signals where the number of vertical effective lines differs. SOLUTION: The system discrimination device is provided with a comparison section that compares the level of a received video signal S1 with a prescribed level and a discrimination section that discriminates the system of a video signal on the basis of the comparison result. Since the device can discriminate the vertical blanking period of a video signal from a vertical effective period of the video signal, the device can discriminate, using the above configuration, the system of the video signal where the number of vertical effective lines differs.
