Class 23 In a separator having a bowl comprising a part 1, and a part 2 axially movable for periodic discharge of sludge, the part 1 is fixed to a cylinder 14 containing a piston 16 fixed to the part 2, and the cylinder is housed in the upper part of the lubricating oil chamber 41 so that the oil may be fed to either side of the piston to move the part 2. The cylinder is formed in the bowl spindle 15 which is driven by a wheel 36, and the piston has a rod 17 slidable within the spindle and connected to the distributer 6 which is fixed to the part 1. A member 32...34 is axially slidable on the spindle and receives and distributes oil thrown upwardly by the wheel. When in the lower position of the member shown, this oil enters an annular chamber 38 and passes through a duct 39 to the upper side of the piston to hold the part 2 against the part 1. When the member is in its upper position, the oil enters an annular chamber 21 some of the oil passing through a duct 29 to open a valve 24 whilst the rest of the oil passes through a duct 22 to the lower side of the piston so that the part 2 is raised from the part 1. |
