790,301. Cigarette - making machines. STONE, H. A., and MOLINS MACHINE CO., Ltd. May 16, 1955 [May 28, 1954], No. 15820/54. Class 130. Uniting bands 7 are pressed against a composite rod of alternate cigarette and mouthpiece portions C<1>,M, C<2> by a conveyer 1 and means are provided which, while the bands are still partially on the conveyer 1, tend to urge the side portions of the bands not in contact with the rod against the rod to prevent them curling downwards. A web 5 of cork tipping material is coated with adhesive at 5a and fed on to a suction drum 1 which moves at a greater speed than the web 5 and which has a suction compartment 3. Spring-loaded knives 6, operated by a hammer 18, cut the web at intervals to form uniting bands 7 which are moved away from the uncut web by the drum 3 and the central part of each band is pressed against the composite rod. Immediately thereafter the bands 7 pass beyond the suction compartment 3 of the drum 1 and compressed air from a compartment 8 in the drum is blown through the holes 2 to urge the sides of the band 7 upwards and prevent them curling downwards until they reach the conveyer band 23 of a folding mechanism which wraps the bands around the rod. The invention is also applicable to the application of uniting bands to separate assemblages each consisting of two cigarette portions with a double-length mouthpiece therebetween. Specication 781,907 is referred to in the Provisional Specification. |
