PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an element configuration of a quantum well field-effect light emitting element placed in an optical resonator and a method for driving it. SOLUTION: This light emitting element contains an light emitting active layer 5 composed of a quantum structure. From a substrate 1, at least a first conductive semiconductor emitter layer 2, a second conductive semiconductor base layer 4, a light emitting quantum well layer 5, an insulation semiconductor barrier layer 6 having a band gap larger than that of the quantum well layer 5, and a first conductive semiconductor collector layer 8 are laminated in this order. Further, light reflectors having high reflective for the light emitted from the light emitting quantum well layer 5 are provided above and below the light emitting quantum well layer 5 so as to surround it.
