PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable a single automatic program generation routine to deal with plural data formats of circuit chart input software concerning a method for automatically generating a sequence program directly from a logic circuit chart. SOLUTION: Connection information from plural different circuit chart input software files 230 and 234 is translated to an intermediate object 205. Next, an automatic generation routine 206 is applied to the data of this intermediate object. Information required for automatic program generation is stored in the intermediate object 205 in a format not dependent on a circuit chart input front end. Therefore, even when changing the circuit chart input front end to be used, it is not necessary to change the automatic program generation routine 26 which is the center of know-how. Since most of circuit chart input front ends do not always include all the data required for the intermediate object, data transformations 203 and 204 are performed as needed.
