PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an industrial method capable of inexpensively and efficiently producing 5-amino-2-chloropyridine to be a synthetic raw material for a medicine and agrochemical. SOLUTION: A 5-cyano-2-halogenopyridine of general formula I (X is a halogen atom) is treated with a hypohalite in the presence of a basic compound to characteristically give the objective 5-amino-2-halogenopyridine of general formula II (X is as shown in the general formula I).
