PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a zoom lens in which a whole length of a lens system is short at the time of storing, at a wide angle end and at a telephotographic end and aberration is satisfactorily compensated while having high variable power. SOLUTION: This zoom lens consists of a 1st group lens G1 with a positive refracting power, a 2nd lens group G2 with a positive refracting power and a 3rd lens group G3 with a negative refracting power, in this order from an object side, and each lens group is moved to the object side when a wide angle end is magnified to a telephotographic end and at the same time, following conditional expressions are satisfied. 0.03<|f3|/fT<0.25 (1), 0.2<ΔX3T/fT<0.44 (2), 1.5<β3T/β3W<6.0 (3), provided f3 is focal distance of the 3rd lens group, fT is the focal distance of the whole zoom lens system in the telephotographic end,ΔX3T is the amount of movement of the before mentioned 3rd lens group to the telephotographic end when the wide angle end is made a referenceβ3T andβ3W are each horizontal magnification of the 3rd lens group in the telephotographic end and the wide angle end.
