PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make an encoder switchable to an arbitrary communication format in accordance with the use of the encoder, by connecting a plurality of communication formats to a selector and an electrically rewritable ROM to the selector and selecting the arbitrary format through the ROM and selector. SOLUTION: The communication formats 51-5c of an encoder circuit 2 are composed of a plurality of preset communication formats having different contents, namely, different kinds of formats, connected to a selector 6 which outputs signals to the outside 4, and constituted so that a rotation detecting signal 1a may be outputted from the selector to the outside 4. Since another kind of communication format can be selected when the content of the ROM 10 connected to the selector 6 is electrically rewritten, a required communication format can be elected arbitrarily through the selector 6 and, in addition, the formats 5a-5c can be switched to each other by means of the ROM 10.
