PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To industrially advantageously produce a cyanobenzoic acid compound useful as an intermediate for medicines, agrochemicals, liquid crystals, monomers for functional polymers or the like in high yield with high purity by oxidizing an aminomethylbenzoic acid compound. SOLUTION: (A) An aminomethylbenzoic acid compound (e.g. p- aminomethylbenzoic acid) as a compound of formula I [CH2NH2 is present at m- or p-position of COOM; M is H or an alkali (ne earth)metal; C is C1 or F; (n) is 0-4.] is oxidized to provide (B) the objective compound (e.g. a p- cyanobenzoic acid) as a compound of formula II (CN is present at m- or p- position of COOM). A desirable method for oxidizing the component A is the method using (C) a transition metal peroxide (e.g. a nickel peroxide) or the method using (E) an oxidizing agent (excluding the component C) in the presence of (D) a nickel compound. |
