PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain excellent read image quality and to maintain a stable read characteristic (color separation characteristic or the like) stably for a long time by suppressing a temperature rise of a CCD sensor or the like and decreasing a temperature change in the CCD sensor or the like after starting the title image reader. SOLUTION: The image reader is provided with a read means 19 that reads image data, a voltage generating means 25 that generates a 1st power supply voltage whose voltage is in excess of a lower limit at which the read means 19 can conduct its read operation and a 2nd power supply voltage whose voltage is smaller than the 1st power supply voltage, and an application control means 27 that applies the 1st power supply voltage to the read means 19 in the case of the reading operation and applies the 2nd power supply voltage to the read means 19 in the reading standby state.
