PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a thick and thin acrylic filament comprising thick fineness parts and thin fineness parts alternately existing in the longer direction of the filament developing a soft dry feeling of splashed pattern-like appearance when dyed and to provide an inexpensive production method excellent in spinning stability. SOLUTION: This thick and thin acrylic filament comprises single yarn constituting filaments, having thick parts and thin parts alternately existing in the longitudinal direction. The thick parts and the thin parts of each single filament exist at substantially the same positions so that objective thick and thin acrylic filament which comprises thick fineness parts and thin fineness parts as a yarn, has a ratio of fineness of the thick fineness parts to that of the thin fineness parts of 1.5-3.0 times and the length of the thin fineness parts of 60 cm to 200 cm. In spinning a spinning dope from a spinneret to a noncoagulating gas and to a coagulating solution, the distance from the spinneret to the liquid level of a coagulating bath is 2-50 mm and a take-off rate from the coagulating solution is varied to give the objective thick and thin yarn of acrylic filament.
