PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a device in which a uniform lateral electric field is generated in the horizontal direction along a glass substrate and liquid crystal molecules can be accurately controlled, and when the device is a scattering type liquid crystal device, the cell thickness is enough to enhance the optical characteristics, by forming plural columnar electrodes on one substrate of a pair of substrates. SOLUTION: In this device, plural columnar electrodes are formed on one substrate of a pair of substrates. For example, when a square pixel region is formed on an active matrix substrate la, columnar electrodes A1 are formed as first electrodes on each vertex of the four corners. Another columnar electrode A2 is disposed as a second electrode at the center of the pixel region, namely, at the position corresponding to the crossing point of lines connecting diagonal vertexes. In the liquid crystal panel P1, when specified voltage is applied between the columnar electrodes A1 and A2, a lateral electric field F in the horizontal direction along the substrates 1a, 1b is generated, and liquid crystal molecules 2a are aligned almost parallel to the glass substrate 1a, 1b by the lateral electric field F. |
