PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To eliminate the need for a complex device and to properly control an air bag by instantaneously detecting a precise distance between the air bag device and an occupant at the time of a collision. SOLUTION: A distance sensor 12 measures the distance between an air bag device 14 and an occupant. An acceleration sensor 11 detects the acceleration of a vehicle. The amount of movement of the occupant is calculated in a controlling device 13 on the bases of the acceleration detected by the acceleration sensor 11. The amount of movement of the occupant is added on the distance measured by the distance sensor 12 to calculate the position of the passenger. The air bag device 14 is controlled on the basis of the calculated position of the passenger.
