PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a practical optical film having an excellent anisotropy of scattering toward linearly polarized light and besides being easily manufactured and having excellent thermal stability and an optical element utilizing it. SOLUTION: The optical element comprises a laminated body provided with the optical film 1 comprising birefringent minute regions (e), dispersed and incorporated in an optically isotropic resin film, composed of a thermoplastic resin having >=50 deg.C glass transition temperature and besides exhibiting a nematic liquid crystal phase in the temperature range lower than the glass transition temperature of the resin and differences of refractive indicesΔn1,Δ2 between the resin film and the minute regions being >=0.03 (Δn1) in a direction orthogonally crossed to a direction of an axis of the maximum transmittance of linearly polarized light and besides being <=50% times ofΔn1 (Δn2) in the direction of the axis of the maximum transmittance, and at least one out of a polarizing plate or an optical retardation plate and one or >=2 layers of the optical films. Thereby anisotropy of scattering, subjecting linear polarized light in theΔn1 direction to scattering and in theΔn2 direction to transmission, is exhibited. |
