PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce the subject antibacterial agent exhibiting an alkalinity, capable of reducing aroma of hinokitiol and improving bactericidal and antibacterial properties by extracting an aqueous solution containing hinokitiol from an arbor piece, reducing the resultant extract and purifying. SOLUTION: This aromatic antibacterial agent is purified by extracting an aqueous solution containing at least hinokitiol from an arbor piece and reducing the resultant aqueous solution. The aqueous solution containing hinokitiol is obtained by, e.g. separating and extracting a mixed solution of an oil solution and aqueous solution obtained by steaming at high pressure and high temperature of a raw material comprising thinned arbor piece, exoderonis, branch leaves, or the like, and quenching and liquefying the resultant steam in which hinokitiol is mixed after passed through the raw material. As a method for reduction, an inert electrode is dipped in the extracted aqueous solution until an oxidation-reduction potential attains a prescribed potential lower than that at the starting time (preferably, a negative potential about <=40 times of the oxidation-reduction potential at the start of the dipping), and then reduced.
