PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To allow an operator to be easily recognized in the case of a decrease in printing performance due to a limit in a printing density by calculating a dot pattern data density for printing at each one time movement of a print head, comparing the calculated density with a printing density limit value, and displaying the result. SOLUTION: A host system 1 such as a computer or the like transmits a command and print data to a printer 11. The printer 11 receives and analyzes the transmitted command and print data by a receiving editor 2, and develops them in dot pattern data 3. A printing density calculating means 4 calculates the density of the developed data 3. A printing density limiting and comparing means 6 compares the calculated density with a predetermined printing density limit value 5, and informs its result to a print head 7 and a display means 9. The head 7 executes a printing limit based on an informed result from a printing density limit comparing and informing means 6, and a display means 9 displays the informed result on a display unit 10 in parallel.
