PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject inhibitor effective for diabetic complications. SOLUTION: This inhibitor is obtained, as an ingredient with high aldose reductase inhibitory activity, by subjecting brown algae to extraction with a hydrous lower alcohol or ethyl acetate followed by concentrating the resultant liquid extract to remove the extraction solvent and then elution into water. The inhibitor thus obtained is effective for diabetic complication in particular, therefore can be used as a preventive/therapeutic agent for the diseases. Furthermore, by making use of its effect, the inhibitor may be added to foods/drinks and the resulting foods/drinks can be taken daily. Because the raw material of this inhibitor is brown algae also used as a dietary food, the inhibitor has no concern about side effects and therefore can be put to long-term internal use. |
