PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize an efficient recording method of defective regions of a disk medium capable of recording a variable number of defective regions to one-defect list input. SOLUTION: This is a method of recording defective regions in a disk medium like a non-rewritable and rewritable optical disk where many successive defective regions may occur. In the medium, the addresses of defective regions are recorded in such a type of code as a run-length limit code. For example, in a main defect list of a defect management region of the optical disk, a group of consecutive region numbers is recorded using (N, L) format. N presents a starting region number of the group in consecutive regions, and L presents a length of the group of consecutive region numbers. Many defective regions can be recorded by this method. It becomes possible to manage defects of a disk medium of a high capacity without increasing defect management regions by this coding mode.
