PURPOSE:To enable simple synthesis of the compound useful as an intermediate for medicines, agrochemicals and ferroelectric liquid crystal by allowing an oxidative dehalogenation enzyme such as dehalogenase to act on specific 1,2-diol or racemic halogenohydrin. CONSTITUTION:Racemic 1,2-diol of formula I [R<1> is OH, halogen; R<2> is alkyl, alkenyl, aryl which may be substituted, when R<1> is OH; or CH2OH, when R<1> is halogen] such as 1,2-propanediol or a halogenohydrin such as 3-chloro-1,2- propanediol is treated with dehalogenase, an oxidative dehalogenase, for example, halo-hydrin dehydro-dehalogenase to provide the objective optically active compound used in medicines, agrochemicals and ferroelectric liquid crystals or as an intermediate therefor. |
