PURPOSE:To reduce molecular weight of alginic acid on an industrial scale because of extremely high alginic lyase productivity of a bacterium belonging to the genus Flavbobacterium capable of decomposing alginic acid by treating alginic acid with the bacterium. CONSTITUTION:Alginic acid is treated with a bacterium [e.g. Flavbobacterium sp. OTC-6 (FERM P-12,159)] capable of decomposing alginic acid. The reaction, for example, is carried out by adding cells to an aqueous solution of an alginic acid. The concentration of alginic acid is usually 0.1-5wt.% and the reaction temperature is usually 20-80 deg.C. |
