Deletion mutant of bovine herpesvirus type 1 (BHV-1) which has a deletion in the glycoprotein gE-gene. The mutant may further have a deletion in the thymidine kinase gene and/or the glycoprotein gl-gene, or have an insertion of a heterologous gene. Recombinant nucleic acid which comprises the gE-gene BHV-l or a part thereof or a nucleotide sequence derived from this glycoprotein gE-gene, whilst said gE is a protein which has, especially in a BHV-1 strain, amino acid sequence (Fig. 3A). Vaccines and diagnostic kits comprising any one of these materials.
