PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new pyridine compound useful as an agrochemical, especially a herbicide. SOLUTION: The objective compound is expressed by formula I [R is COR1, cyano or the like; R1 is H, OH or the like; Ra is a 2-6C alkenyl, a 2-6C alkynyl or the like; Rb and Rc are each H, a halogen or the like; X and Y are each H, a 1-4C alkyl or the like; Z is CH or N; W is O, S or the like; R7 is H, formyl or the like], e.g. 4-(1-methylvinyl)-2-(4,6-dimethoxypyrimidin-2-ylthio)pyridine-3- carboxylic acid methyl ester. The compound of formula I can be produced e.g. by converting a compound of formula II (R17 to R19 are each H or the like; Me is methyl) [e.g. 4-isopropyl-2-(4,6-dimethoxypyrimidin-2-ylthio)pyridine-3- carboxylic acid methyl ester] into a compound of formula III through bromination and reaction with a base, reacting the produced compound of formula III with n-butyllithium and finally reacting the product with water. The compound is useful for the control of weeds such as common chickweed.
