PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject new compound having a peculiar fragrance, useful in the field of perfume and applicable to a wide range of uses such as perfumery and/or detergents comprising perfumed water, environmental fragrance, soap, lotion, shampoo. SOLUTION: This new compound is expressed by formula I [wherein, R is methyl or phenyl; Y is a (substituted) <=10C hydrocarbon group; (n) is 1 or 2] and is e.g. 3-methyl-5-phenyl-cis-4-penten-1-ol. The compound of formula I is obtained e.g. by reacting a cyclic vinyl ether of formula II with a Grignard reagent of the formula RMgX (wherein, X is chlorine, bromine or iodine) in the presence of a triarylphosphine and a nickel compound and by the acylation of the resultant cis-unsaturated alcohol of formula III with a carboxylic acid (or its derivative) of the formula YCO2H. A perfume composition including the compound of formula I is also applicable to the perfuming of food, fiber, cloth, paper, coating materials, ink, plastics or the like.
