PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a beautifully whitening cosmetic which has an excellent effect to improve stains and freckles and has excellent stability, by adding trans-umbellic acid. SOLUTION: This beautifully whitening cosmetic contains trans-umbellic acid and preferably further kojic acid (5-hydroxy-2-hydroxymethyl-γ-pyrone). The trans-umbellic acid is a pale yellow powdery compound in which hydroxyl groups are bound to the ortho- and para-positions of the phenyl group of trans- cinnamic acid, and is obtained by a synthetic method. When used in cosmetics such as creams, lotions, milky lotions, packs, skin lotions, essence powder, foundations, sun cares and bath salts, the trans-umbellic acid is added in an amount of preferably 0.001-5.0 wt.%, more preferably 0.01-2.0 wt.%, based on the total amount of the cosmetic, and the kojic acid is further added in an amount of preferably 0.01-2.0 wt.%, more preferably 0.05-2.0 wt.%.
