MANUFACTURE OF PLASTIC OPTICAL FIBER PREFORM AND PLASTIC OPTICAL FIBER

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To actualize the homogeneous plastic optical fiber preform which forms the plastic optical fiber having excellent transmission characteristics without light loss due to deviation from circular section and is free of what is called shrinks (a kind of recessed part formed on a surface) and air bubbles. SOLUTION: A layer of a heat insulating medium 2 which has relatively small specific gravity is formed above a heat conducting medium 1 in a thermostatic chamber 3 and a vertical temperature gradient generated by contacting air is formed in the heat insulating medium 2 on the upper layer side to homogenize the temperature distribution of the heat conducting medium 1 on the lower layer side; and the plastic optical fiber preform consists of a columnar polymer body which is obtained by polymerizing polymerizable monomers 4 while a cylindrical polymerizing container 5 containing the polymerizable monomers 4 is dipped in the heat conducting medium 1 having the temperature distribution homogenized.
