PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader capable of reducing a manufacture cost and realizing stable read performance by determining the timing of sampling the level of a field through component and the level of a pixel signal component, based on respective digital data in changing the phase of timing signals. SOLUTION: The signal output terminal of a line CCD 116 is connected through an amplifier 76 to an A/D converter 82. Then, signals outputted from the line CCD 116 are amplified in the amplifier 76 and then, converted to the digital data at the timing corresponding to the timing signals inputted from a timing generator 74 by the A/D converter 82. Then, relating to this image reader, based on the respective digital data in changing the phase of the timing signals inputted from the timing generator 74 to the A/D converter 82, the timing of sampling the level of the field through component and the level of the pixel signal component is determined.
