PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance the intimate contact of an electrode with an organic layer and to suppress reduction in brightness and increase in electric power consumption by introducing a super thin film of a compound having a sulfur atom containing substituent on the interface between the luminescent layer side of at least one electrode and an organic layer. SOLUTION: This organic electroluminescent element is formed by sequentially depositing a positive electrode, a layer consisted of an organic compound having a sulfur atom containing substituent with structure of a mercapto group, a sulfide group and a disulfide group, etc., a hole transport layer, a luminescent layer, an electron transport layer and a negative electrode. The layer of the organic compound having a sulfur atom containing substituent enhances the intimate contact of the positive electrode surface having relatively high hydrophilicity with a highly hydrophilic material forming the hole transport layer. The several number of the sulfur atom containing substituent is preferable. This organic compound layer has the purpose to improve the electrode surface to form a uniform, supper thin film; its thickness may be 1-10 nm.
