PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thermal developing device with a superior reproducibility of surface temperature of a thermal developing drum by performing appropriate temperature control regardless of the plate where a body to be developed comes into contact with the thermal developing drum and also regardless of the size of the body to be developed. SOLUTION: In this thermal developing device, although lowering of temperature in a section indicated by an arrow F is detected by a temperature sensor 122 before a sensitive material 16 and a reception material 40 are separated, temperature control of the thermal developing drum is not carried out during this time. Heating of the thermal developing drum 84 is started and temperature control is carried out when the sensitive material 16 and the reception material 40 are completely separated and lowering of temperature is detected in the section shown by an arrow E. After that, temperature control of the thermal developing drum utilizing heat of a part in contact for detection is carried out when the temperature of the part in contact indicated by a thick dotted line D is detected and temperature control is carried out utilizing the heat of the part in contact for the other parts as well, that is when the temperature of non contact parts is detected.
