PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an encoding method and an encoder using pattern matching capable of improving encoding efficiency even in the case that a dot angle does not become 0 degree or 45 degrees like a color printed page transmission system. SOLUTION: A dot angle transformation part 21 transforms the dot angle of the image data of an image area separated by a boundary retracing processing pat 12 to 0 degree or 45 degrees. An intra-mark correlation check part 22 judges a dot cycle for the dot angle transformed image data. A mark re-division part 23 generates the mark of a small size based on the dot cycle. Then, a match judgement part 13 judges whether or not a matching mark is present in a library for a segmented mark. When the matching one is present, the segmented mark and the matching mark in the library are outputted to a match template processing part 32.
