Production of an extract (A) of a photosynthetic microorganism comprises: (i) culturing the microorganism; (ii) transferring the cells to induction medium to increase production of metabolites; (iii) lysing the cells, in the cold; (iv) mixing the lysate with a separation medium; and (v) separating soluble and insoluble fractions of the lysate by tangential filtration, in the cold, to produce a crude extract. An Independent claim is also included for (A) produced using the new method and to which has been added at least one of honey, royal jelly and propolis.
