PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a projection display device that a picture can be displayed with high contrast by making a background dark even when the circumference is light. SOLUTION: This projection display device 1 is constituted of a laser scanner part 10, a control part 40, a picture input part 47, a scattering plate driving circuit 45 and a screen 50 having a micro shutter array 30 and a light absorbing body 52. By the scanner part 10, a laser beam LB modulated based on picture data is projected on the screen 50 for scanning it. At this time, only shutters (37) to which the beam LB is applied are set at a reflecting position and the shutters other than the shutters (37) are set at a transmitting position. By setting the shutters other than the shutters 37 on which the beam LB is projected at the transmitting position, light made incident from the outside is absorbed by the absorbing body 52. Thus, the picture of only the beam LB can be clearly displayed with the well-set background whose black level is low.
