PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make controllable the width of lines without damaging the shape of the end parts of lines forming a character. SOLUTION: Such character information producing device is employed that is equipped with a coordinate value memory device 11 for storing coordinate values for forming the outlines of a character, a coordinate value scaling device 12 for scaling up/down coordinate values sent from the coordinate value memory device 11, a line- width correction vector memory device 13 for storing corrective values indicating directions in which respective coordinate values should be moved, a corrective value memory device 14 for storing corrective values denoting the amount of travel respective coordinate values should make, an adding/subtracting device 15 for adding or subtracting the corrective values stored in the corrective value memory device 14 to or from the scaled up/down coordinate values according to the corrective values stored in the line-width correction vector memory device 13, and a curvilinear coordinate value correcting device 16 for dividing, into line segments, an outline formed based on the coordinate values scaled up/down in the coordinate value scaling device 12 and, if a line segment of them is a curve, making a correction so that a polygon formed of opposite end points on the line segment and of respective control points becomes a similar figure to a polygon prior to the addition/subtraction.
