The cartridge, for removing carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides and unburned hydrocarbons, has a metallic casing with a gas compression chamber at its upstream end followed by the non-flammable filter made of asbestos. The asbestos filter is followed by an antacid filter made of calcium carbonate, which absorb nitrogen compounds. The final part may consist of a platinum sponge or foam or an absorbent material, e.g. wood charcoal, crushed to form lumps approximately the size of a cherry.
