Apparatus for twisting filaments, and especially of glass, has a ring traveler (11) and balloon limit (10) mounted to the center frame section on two separate and independent supports (23,24). They are structured to receive simultaneous up and down variable or constant movements while winding the twisted filaments on a programmed cycle on one side. They are structured to receive simultaneous up and down variable or constant movements while winding the twisted filaments on a programmed cycle on one side and, on the other, can be moved apart at the end of the filament twisting cycle for cutting and/or to stop the machine. The supports (23,24) are operated by independent control signals. The amplitude can stay equal as long as the length of the balloon is constant, and is varied to increase or decrease the balloon length to give an optimum constant filament tension along the development of the wound bobbin. The axis of the spindle between the ring traveler (11) and the balloon limit (10) can be modified by 50-25 cm as the bobbin is wound, to give the cutting action when the gap between them has reached 75 cm.
