PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To measure the number of sheets remaining on a medium holding tray of an image forming device independently of the thickness of the sheets. SOLUTION: A mechanism (calculation processing by medium counting manager in a ROM) is provided which approximates the number of mediums in a medium holding tray 12 by utilizing the medium hold level of mediums detected in the medium holding tray 12 in combination with the actual number of mediums processed by an image forming device 10. In this method to measure the number of mediums in the medium holding tray 12, a first medium hold level of mediums in the medium holding tray 12 is detected, and a second medium hold level of mediums in the medium holding tray 12 is detected, and the number of mediums remaining in the medium holding tray 12 is calculated based on at least the detected second level of mediums and counting of each medium taken out from the medium holding tray 12.
