PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the degree of freedom in a roll section and to add a turntable so as to suppress center deflection by rotating and lowering a rubbing roll in the state of maintaining its axial direction constant and rubbing the alignment layer on a substrate mounted on a transport table by the rubbing roll. SOLUTION: When the substrate 13 comes to a position A, the turntable 11 rotates clockwise by a prescribed angleθand the transport table 12 shifts to a position B. Next, the rubbing roll 10 begins to rotate and descends by the prescribed extent so as to come into contact with the substrate 13 placed on the transport table 12. The transport table 12 table moves linearly and is subjected to a rubbing treatment when the transport table passes under the rubbing roll 10. When the transport table 12 comes to the C position on the turntable 11, the rubbing roll 10 stops and ascends. When the rubbing roll 10 completes the ascending action, the turntable 11 swivels by the sameθangle reverse from before and the substrate 13 is shifted to a position D.
